Avrenim Developments were awarded the contract to create new Air Locks and form a new seclusion room on behalf of Mersey Care Foundation Trust. The project consisted of the formation of 4 air lock and seclusion areas across 2 wards within the Broadoak Unit situated on the Broadgreen Hospital site.
Once the requirements from the client were set out, the Avrenim Developments team created a phased programme to deliver a plan of works with the interest of patient safety and Mersey Care.
Following close liaison with the Mersey Care project team and the stakeholders within Broadoak unit, including ward staff, nurses and management Avrenim then began works in the first phase of work.
Work was agreed to be done in a phased manner due to the vulnerability of the patients inside Broadoak whilst not compromising the day to day functionality of the clinical team.
Safety of the patients and clinical team was always of primary focus in delivering these works.
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the construction team never hindered the day to day operation of the nursing staff and being in that live environment it was of the utmost importance to assist the nursing team in any way practical. Service user security is a critical concern in mental health facilities and this was successfully managed through close communication between the construction team and the client, constant detailed planning and the awareness and appreciation of the environment Avrenim were working in.
Due to the nature of these works there was significant stakeholders involved. Avrenim maintained a flexible approach to delivering these works as it was essential to deliver these works safely and to work with the client but also within the clients programme.
Challenge
The security, safety and wellbeing of the patients within the ward. The patients were considered to be vulnerable and always required close care and attention from ward staff.
Solution
With careful consideration, liaison and planning Avrenim coordinated works in a manner which never breached the security arrangements of the hospital
Results
Avrenim successfully delivered the refurbishment of the Broadoak unit without one security concern being raised from the Trust and the relationship between Avrenim and the client, including stakeholders grew to be a very positive one.
I would like to pass on some comments from the ward managers at Broadoak about the manner of the work being undertaken on the Ward airlocks. They have all passed comment on the communication and quality of the work as well as of the professionalism shown by Stephen and his team.
